While a growing body of literature exists on initial word-to-meaning mapping and retrieval of fully lexicalized words, our understanding on the consolidation that occurs between these two stages remains limited. The current study investigated the neural correlates of retrieving newly learned word using oscillatory brain dynamics. Participants learned to associate new words with unknown objects and performed overt and covert naming tasks during the first and last days of a five-day training period. Behavioral results showed improved overt naming on Day 5 compared to Day 1. Selecting only words that were successfully produced in the overt naming task, we examined oscillatory activity associated with word retrieval while participants produced new words covertly, both pre- (Day 1) and post (Day 5) learning. The results showed a robust alpha (8-12 Hz) and lower beta (13-25 Hz) power decrease during covert naming after learning. We hypothesize that this alpha-beta power decrease indexes successful word retrieval following consolidation. Show less

We investigated how naturalistic actions in a highly immersive, multimodal, interactive 3D virtual reality (VR) environment may enhance word encoding by recording EEG in a pre/post-test learning paradigm. While behavior data have shown that coupling word encoding with gestures congruent with word meaning enhances learning, the neural underpinnings of this effect have yet to be elucidated. We coupled EEG recording with VR to examine whether embodied learning improves learning and creates linguistic representations that produce greater motor resonance. Participants learned action verbs in an L2 in two different conditions: specific action (observing and performing congruent actions on virtual objects) and pointing (observing actions and pointing to virtual objects). Pre- and post-training participants performed a match-mismatch task as we measured EEG (variation in the N400 response as a function of match between observed actions and auditory verbs) and a passive listening task while we measured motor activation (mu [8-13 Hz] and beta band [13-30 Hz] desynchronization during auditory verb processing) during verb processing. Contrary to our expectations, post-training results revealed neither semantic nor motor effects in either group when considered independently of learning success. Behavioral results showed a great deal of variability in learning success. When considering performance, low performance learners showed no semantic effect and high performance learners exhibited an N400 effect for mismatch versus match trials post-training, independent of the type of learning. Taken as a whole, our results suggest that embodied processes can play an important role in L2 learning. Show less

The T-455C and C-482T APOC3 promoter region polymorphisms (SNPs) have recently been reported to predispose to dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in Indian subjects, but the association with liver damage has not been evaluated so far. The aim was to assess the association between APOC3 SNPs and liver damage in Caucasian patients. We considered 437 Italian patients with histological diagnosis of NAFLD (including 137 children, 120 morbid obese) and 316 healthy controls, 71 Italian family trios, and 321 patients from the UK. APOC3 SNPs were determined by sequencing, allele-specific oligonucleotide probes and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis, hepatic APOC3 mRNA levels by real-time PCR. APOC3 SNPs were not associated with NAFLD in Italian subjects, although a borderline significance for the transmission of the -455T allele was observed in the family study. Homozygosity for the APOC3 wild-type genotype (APOC3 WT) was associated with a more favorable lipid profile in control subjects, and consistently with lower hepatic APOC3 mRNA levels in obese patients without diabetes. However, APOC3 SNPs, alone or in combination, were not associated with insulin resistance, altered lipid levels, liver enzymes, and with liver damage (severity of steatosis, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, and moderate/severe fibrosis) in Italian as well as in UK patients, and in the whole cohort. Stratification for the I148M PNPLA3 mutation, associated with the susceptibility to NASH, did not alter the results. APOC3 genotype is not associated with progressive liver damage in Caucasian patients with NAFLD. Show less
