Neuroplasticity, the brain's capacity to adapt structurally and functionally in response to experiences, is a key factor in recovery from neurological conditions. Growing interest has focused on physical and emotional interventions as potential modulators of neuroplastic processes. A narrative review was conducted using a structured PubMed search of articles published between January 2018 and March 2023. Studies were included if they examined physical activity, emotional well-being, or cognitive training, with outcomes relevant to neuroplasticity. Publications outside these parameters, non-English studies, and case reports were excluded. Twenty-seven articles met the inclusion criteria. The literature described a range of possible influences. Exercise was frequently linked with markers such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and synaptic plasticity. Emotional interventions, including stress reduction and mindfulness, were reported to have variable effects on neural adaptation. Cognitive training was discussed in relation to functional recovery in conditions such as stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Findings across studies were heterogeneous, and conclusions were limited by differences in study designs and outcome measures. Current evidence suggests that both physical and emotional interventions may influence neuroplasticity, though results are not uniform. The diversity of methodologies and measured outcomes indicates that more rigorous and standardized research is needed. While the reviewed literature points to potential benefits of physical and emotional interventions in modulating neuroplasticity, evidence remains preliminary. Further high-quality longitudinal studies are required to clarify their role in neurological rehabilitation and clinical care. Show less

Preclinical studies suggest that a triglyceride (TG)-independent proinflammatory action of apolipoprotein C-III (apoCIII) exists. We aimed to investigate the relationship between circulating apoCIII levels and subclinical inflammation markers across different cohorts with distinctive inflammatory patterns: patients with metabolic disorders (MDs), patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and controls. Specifically, we assessed the associations of apoCIII with acute inflammation biomarkers (e.g., high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP)) and novel systemic inflammation biomarkers (e.g., glycosylated proteins: Glyc-A, Glyc-B, Glyc-F), aiming to understand the role of apoCIII beyond its traditional function in TG metabolism. This cross-sectional study involved 1242 participants: 906 patients with MD (metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and/or obesity), 192 patients with RA, and 144 controls. ApoCIII and hsCRP levels were measured via immunoturbidimetric assays, and glycosylated proteins were quantified via 1 H-NMR spectroscopy. Correlation and multivariate linear regression analyses were conducted. ApoCIII levels were significantly and positively associated with Glyc-A, Glyc-B, and Glyc-F levels across all cohorts. Most of these associations remained significant in the MD group after adjusting for TG levels. Conversely, negative associations were detected between apoCIII and hsCRP patients with MD and RA, which were maintained after including TG in the models. In patients with MD and RA, circulating apoCIII levels were positively associated with glycoproteins and negatively with hsCRP, in a TG-independent manner. Our results suggest that apoCIII is associated with the low-grade inflammatory profile represented by glycoproteins, independent of triglyceride levels. Additionally, we observed a negative association with hsCRP, which, while seemingly paradoxical, has been reported in previous studies. Show less

The GramAdapt Social Contact Dataset is a curated dataset of 34 language pairs with qualitative and quantifiable data on social interaction and aspects of societal multilingualism. The language pairs were sampled globally to represent the world's linguistic diversity. The dataset can be used to interrogate the social dimensions of language contact independently or in conjunction with appropriate linguistic data. The data were collected by distributing a questionnaire to experts who have experience with either one or both of the language communities of a pair. The data represent subjective expert assessments based on choices from predetermined answers which can be quantified. Authors 1, 2 and 3 manually checked the response to identify possible misjudgments or misunderstandings. This results in a dataset containing 13,493 data points. This dataset is a first of its kind in the field of linguistics, built upon wide findings from sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, psycholinguistics, and linguistic anthropology. Show less

Tropomyosin-related kinase (TRK) receptor B (TRKB) mediates the supportive actions of neurotrophin 4/5 and brain-derived neurotrophic factor on early ovarian follicle development. Absence of TRKB receptors reduces granulosa cell (GC) proliferation and delays follicle growth. In the present study, we offer mechanistic insights into this phenomenon. DNA array and quantitative PCR analysis of ovaries from TrkB-null mice revealed that by the end of the first week of postnatal life, Jagged1, Hes1, and Hey2 mRNA abundance is reduced in the absence of TRKB receptors. Although Jagged1 encodes a NOTCH receptor ligand, Hes1 and Hey2 are downstream targets of the JAGGED1-NOTCH2 signaling system. Jagged1 is predominantly expressed in oocytes, and the abundance of JAGGED1 is decreased in TrkB(-/-) oocytes. Lack of TRKB receptors also resulted in reduced expression of c-Myc, a NOTCH target gene that promotes entry into the cell cycle, but did not alter the expression of genes encoding core regulators of cell-cycle progression. Selective restoration of JAGGED1 synthesis in oocytes of TrkB(-/-) ovaries via lentiviral-mediated transfer of the Jagged1 gene under the control of the growth differentiation factor 9 (Gdf9) promoter rescued c-Myc expression, GC proliferation, and follicle growth. These results suggest that neurotrophins acting via TRKB receptors facilitate early follicle growth by supporting a JAGGED1-NOTCH2 oocyte-to-GC communication pathway, which promotes GC proliferation via a c-MYC-dependent mechanism.
